Posted by Given the doom and gloom that beset the previous year and also the beginning of this year, I thought it prudent to focus on some positive happy things like books! And what’s better, funny books!
Humour and comedy is the leading genre I read, heading up a long list that includes mysteries, thrillers, and young adult fantasy. Its my go-to genre, and never fails to perk me up when I’m feeling low.
My funniest five:
Honestly, I could just put down all PG Wodehouse books from 1 to 100 and then have a top 5, but for the sake of this list I’ll choose just one. I love the Jeeves books too, but the Psmith series is perfect!
One of the most popular authors of regency romance, Georgette Heyer wrote a number of funny novels. After devouring her whole collection, I found Cotillion the funniest of the lot.
The book that triggered the chick-lit genre is one of the all-time funniest ever. The diary format became quite popular and was used to great effect in this modern retelling of Pride and Prejudice. Even the hero’s name is Darcy!
This book won the Pulitzer Prize in 2018 and I read it just last year. It is essentially a satire about a gay author who goes on a journey to recover from heartbreak.
This is another one where I’m such a huge fan of the author I could just go ahead and club all his books into the top funniest ever.
And a final bonus one:
Trigger alert – this is actually a book about suicide. I didn’t know one could write funny books centered on sensitive subjects. I won’t say more – but you will have to read it to believe it.
I’ve read and re-read these many times over. They’re my comfort reads that I grab whenever I’m not in the mood for something serious or heavy.
