Resources Roundup – Dec’21

Posted by

Whoops! Did this post come up way too early? Did I schedule it by mistake? Fear not, friends, I’ve just switched things around from this month. Going forward I’ll post the links to the resources before the next month starts, so that you have at your fingertips a number of markets and opportunities, and also some excellent advice that will help you get published there.

First off, if you’re looking for self-publishing tips, I found these two posts quite helpful:

From the site of the ever-helpful and ever-creative Damyanti Biswas comes A Beginner’s Guide to Self-Publishing in 2021.

Publishing … and Other Forms of Insanity: Free Publicity for Your KDP Select Free Days (publishedtodeath.blogspot.com) – this is an old post that’s been updated a couple of days back with the latest list of resources.

For help with writing a novella, check out Are You Reading (or Writing) a Novella? at Fiction Writers Review

The Forge Literary Magazine, that had published my story Her Metamorphosis back in March, has shared its list of Pushcart nominations. Check the pieces here – I’m picking my way through them and admiring the work of these wonderful writers!

My brilliant writer friends have published a number of excellent stories in recent months. Check out short fiction Gulabrai by Salini Vineeth and Praveena Shivram’s Vajeeha’s Dream at Chaicopy Mediums Vol. 5 Issue 2 November 2021.

I found these nonfiction narratives and essays quite absorbing also:

‘Homes and the World’ by Bhaswati Ghosh | Literary Shanghai

Succession at fiftytwo.in

Urban Cacophony of the Heartening Kind | RoundGlass | Sustain

Short of ideas for stories? Check out Reedsy’s Prompts and especially their latest contest (warning – this comes with a $5 submission fee).

If you have any creative work that you’re itching to send out, revise your pieces and take a look at 62 Writing Contests in December 2021 – No entry fees. The same site has also featured 21 New Literary Magazines Accepting Submissions NOW – Paying Markets. Keep an eye out here for more submission opportunities that will be published in a day or two.

Freedom with Writing, a fantastic resource of resources, hosts 18 Deadlines This Week: Short Stories, Magazine Pitches, Etc, a number of themed submission calls, and fiction markets to submit to until the end of the year.

Another two sites you should bookmark, as I have mentioned in my updated Resources list, are Erika Dreifus’ Newsletter and Cathy’s Comps and Calls. Both feature calls for submissions and writing contests that don’t require submission fees. The former focuses on paying opportunities while the latter includes the non-paying ones but highlights the ones that compensate writers, whether with monetary payment or in the form of contributor copies.

Phew! I bet that’s more than you bargained for! Now come on you can do it – dust off those stories and essays and send out your stuff! After all, if you don’t submit, you can’t get published, right?
