10 Types of Writers – Which One are You?

A long time back, I stumbled upon a post detailing the types of writers:

Writer 1: The writer that never sleeps
Writer 2: The writer who sold their soul
Writer 3: The writer who kills everyone
Writer 4: The writer who doesn’t know what happens next
Writer 5: The writer who researches every tiny detail
Writer 6: The writer who forgets what they’re writing
Writer 7: The writer who never writes

Writer 8: The writer who edits as they write
Writer 9: The writer who disappears for 1.5 years
Writer 10: The writer who is never heard from again

So which one are you?

There’s probably a slew of other kinds of writers out there, but this list captures the common ones. It didn’t take me long to figure out where I stand!

I’m not Writer 1 because I make sure to get my eight hours. Without it I’d never manage my whole day. I’m simply not the kind of person who can subsist regularly on six hours of sleep.

I’m definitely not Writer 2, 3 or 4. If I’d sold my soul, I wouldn’t be writing this blog! I hardly ever kill any of my characters, and I mostly know what happens next in my stories because I’m a relentless plotter. I’d flounder without my outlines!

Writer 5 is the one I’m approaching or I’ll turn into if I’m not careful. I don’t research every little detail but still quite a bit before jumping into the actual writing.

I can never forget what I’m writing, so I’m surely not Writer 6. It takes me months after I’ve composed the original draft to actually view the story with fresh eyes.

I’ve been Writer 7 and 9, but never Writer 8. There have been long periods of time that I haven’t written, sometimes 1.5 years and sometimes even more. I rarely edit as I write, because I’m always in too much of a hurry to finish the first draft of a piece. It’s as if I can’t rest until I have unloaded the story whirling in my brain.

I certainly hope to never become Writer 10! I think this one is well within our control, so we can and should strive to not get there.
