5 Resources for Short Story Writers

Posted by

One of the best things you can do when you’re not writing is to read about writing and keep up to date with all the tips and resources and newsletters out there. I subscribe to a few newsletters and blogs which I might have shared the links before already, but there are some I’ve discovered quite recently.

Matt Bell’s Writing Exercises Newsletter

I stumbled across this writing exercises newsletter quite recently shared by a fellow creative writer. I haven’t tried any of the prompts but I find it quite exciting and looking forward to trying them out.

Nathaniel Tower’s blog

The editor of the erstwhile Bartleby Snopes online literary journal, Nathaniel Tower, had published my story Social Not-Working in the year 2012, which seems like eons ago right now. His blog is chock full of writing and publishing advice targeted specially for the short story writer. His latest post on choosing the appropriate literary journal for your work is especially relevant.

Anne R Allen

In conjunction with New York Times bestselling author Ruth Harris, Anne R Allen maintains this blog full of tips related to writing publishing marketing and even brainstorming ideas. Her articles and posts are quite long but brimming with information and ideas that you can use create a way to write your next novel, increase your sales, market your book better on Amazon, and more in that vein.

Book Fox

John Matthew Fox maintains this site and newsletter geared towards helping writers pen beautiful sentences, improve their craft and also understand more about publishing. Check out his guide to genres that all writers should know about.

Reedsy

I have found the Reedsy blog and newsletter super helpful and interesting, especially the vast variety of prompts they offer. An added bonus: they also host a writing contest based on the prompts they send out, which can win you up to $50! My story The Prodigal Daughter won their contest and was published a few years ago.

Damyanti Writes

Bestselling novelist Damyanti Biswas offers this treasure trove of links and resources to excellent tips and articles in her monthly newsletter. You can subscribe by clicking here. While you’re there do check out her novel You Beneath Your Skin – it’s one of the best crime thrillers out there!

That’s all the resources I have for you this week! Do let me know if you have any other recommendations, in the comments below.
